Are you currently working in private security—or hoping to start? Do you need to demonstrate your French language proficiency for the CNAPS (National Council for Private Security Activities)? You’re in the right place!
The Test d’Évaluation de Français (TCF) is your key to proving your language skills and advancing your career. Here’s what you need to know to get started.
Why French Proficiency Matters in Security Roles
Since 2022, passing a French language test has become a mandatory step for foreign nationals seeking employment in private security in France. This requirement ensures that security agents have the necessary language skills to perform their duties safely, effectively, and professionally.
To meet this requirement, candidates must demonstrate at least a B1 level of French—indicating they can understand key information and give clear instructions in French.
📌 Note: This requirement does not apply to French citizens.

Take the TCF to Prove Your French Level
To validate your French proficiency, take the TCF (Test d’Évaluation de Français)—a standardized exam recognized by the French Ministry of the Interior and accepted by CNAPS.
While all TCF versions are accepted, the TCF IRN (Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité) is especially suited to your needs. Designed for non-French nationals aged 16 and older, the TCF IRN offers a reliable measure of your ability to reach level B1.
📝 The TCF IRN includes 4 computer-based sections:
Listening comprehension: 10 minutes, 17 questions
Reading comprehension: 30 minutes, 13 questions
Written expression: 30 minutes, 2 prompts
Oral expression: 10 minutes, 2 speaking tasks
The TCF certificate is valid for 2 years and can also be used later when applying for a 10-year residence permit or French naturalization.
